The dictionary defines orthodontics as a branch of dentistry dealing with irregularities of the teeth (as malocclusion) and their correction (as by braces). Orthodontics used to be called orthodontia – a word coming from the Greek orthos, meaning “straight, perfect or proper”, and dontos, which means “teeth”.  An orthodontic specialist is called an orthodontist.
