01 Dec Facial Rejuvenation FOR A YOUTHFUL APPEARANCE by Hilary Clary
As we age, our skin loses elasticity and begins to sag and wrinkle and we lose volume in the face. Because of constant exposure to the sun and elements and genetics, facial skin can lose elasticity quicker than the rest of the body. The face can look tired and old before its time. An experienced plastic surgeon can utilize a combination of surgical and non-surgical techniques to create a youthful, natural appearance for patients, helping them to increase their confidence.
Bruce Byrne, M.D., owner of Regional Plastic Surgery Center in Rockwall, is a board certified plastic surgeon extensively trained and experienced on all parts of the face and body. Dr. Byrne is committed to excellence in plastic surgery, patient safety and patient education.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Face Lift?
A face lift can reverse the following signs of aging:
- Deep lines and folds that run from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth
- Cheek and neck wrinkles
- Sagging skin on the upper cheekbones
- Sunken, thinned out look
- Hanging, loose neck skin around the neck and chin area, referred to as jowls
Most people exhibit multiple signs of aging. The face lift procedure will reduce but cannot make all signs of aging disappear. To correct additional facial concerns that are not fully corrected with a face lift, a range of other cosmetic surgery procedures, such as eyelid surgery and brow lift can also be performed. Frequently fat grafting is performed at the same time to restore the volume around the cheeks, lower eyes, temples, etc. that are hallmarks of a youthful face. For surface texture lines, laser resurfacing can also be performed at the same time.
Can a Brow Lift Really Make me Look Younger?
Drooping eyebrows and horizontal forehead lines can make you look tired and older than you are. Brow lift surgery, a cosmetic surgery procedure, can restore a smoother, more youthful appearance to the area above the eyes. The brow lift can frequently be performed through the endoscope, providing much smaller incisions and less risks.
Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery is a popular procedure. Many people have unattractive or tired looking eyes caused by excess skin or loose skin in the upper eyelid. This excess skin can impair vision, cause puffy eyelids, and create very fine wrinkles and droopy skin in the lower eyelid. These problems are usually related to general aging or heredity and can be lessened or eliminated with eyelid surgery. Patients who have eyelid surgery will find that they appear more alert and younger looking.
Non-surgical enhancements or skin treatments such as laser skin resurfacing can prove effective for a younger looking appearance without surgery. Botox®, Juvederm®, Juvederm Voluma™, Radiesse® and Sculptra® Aesthetic are non-surgical injectables that remove lines and wrinkles, plump up lips, and create youthful firmness in the cheeks. Because these techniques do not involve surgery, only topical anesthesia is used. In addition, recovery time is considerably shorter than with surgical procedures and the risk of complications is significantly lower.
All cosmetic patients should undergo an extensive consultation with their plastic surgeon prior to surgery. To best meet the patient’s expectations, the consultation should include a thorough discussion of the facial features a patient wants to correct and how the patient expects to look after the procedures. This consultation should be an open, honest conversation with their surgeon. In addition to the cosmetic surgery procedures under consideration, patients will also discuss their medical history. From this discussion, a personalized cosmetic surgery plan is formed.
